This is an amazingly thorough guide into the interior life and its barriers. This is not a book to breeze through, and think that just by reading it, you become a mystic without a monastery. The Necessity of Meeting God in Darkness, Caroline Myss explored the modern mystical experience with musings on the dark night of the soul, patience, gratitude, imagination, and creativity; we found this teaching to be very profound. Casual readers will throw this book away, as its intent is not to entertain, but to enlighten.

She makes good points in the book. Are people willing to become mystics without monasteries, to selflessly engage in service to the world, to do the inner of their soul and the outer work needed to transform our times? Or will they turn away from this demanding path and look instead to the promises of such counterfeit teachings as The Secretwhich says you can get whatever you want just by believing you can have it, an approach recently given a huge boost by Oprah and Larry King?
Actually, most of her books are marketed this way, with the target audience being people who are in search of either cures or an identity. If this is what it takes to be a mystic, I don't need it. Do not get attached to the signposts, to the imagery of symbols and metaphors.
